Democrats have NO problem with Sharia law in the United States as they united to kill SB 58 American Laws for American Courts in the Florida Legislature.
|
SB 58 American Laws for American Courts died a procedural death at the hands of united Democrats. The language of HB 351 became different from SB 58 because of the amendment process in the House of Representatives. HB 351 passed the Florida House of Representatives on April 18th by a 79 – 39 vote (see vote below). With little time left on May 2nd the Senate proposed consideration of HB 351 instead of SB 58 which required a two thirds (27 votes) vote by the senate. The senate vote to consider HB 351 instead of SB 58 failed 25 – 14 (see vote below). All Democratic senators opposed this legislation. Republican Senator Nancy Detert did not vote. Additionally, Senator Geraldine Thompson, who voted for SB 58 in committee, was pressured by the Democratic Caucus to change her vote which she did.
While there were a few hurdles placed in the path of SB 58 by Republican leadership they paled in the face of the Democratic Party’s fervent opposition. Democrats vocally opposed SB 58 and HB 351 in every committee. Democrats pushed eleven hostile amendments (see Democrat amendments below) when SB 58 was considered by the full Senate.
Democrats clearly have NO problem with allowing Sharia law to be considered in Florida Courts. Their position to oppose ONLY American laws in American courts is most likely NOT principled but political, trading sovereignty for a voting bloc.
Florida Family Association applauds Representative Larry Metz and Senator Alan Hays for their leadership in sponsoring the American Laws for American Courts legislation.
Florida Family Association thanks everyone who sent emails and made phone calls to senators. Your support clearly moved some hurdles.
Democrats offered eleven hostile amendments.
