Florida Family Association sent out an alert last week that asked people to send emails to urge GOP US Senators to move the SAVE Act to a full vote and consider modifying the filibuster rule.
The email in this call to action goes directly the Senator Thune's Chief of Staff.
The U.S. House of Representatives passed the SAVE Act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act) on April 10, 2025 by a vote of 220 to 208 with 4 Democrats voting in favor of the legislation. This bill requires individuals to provide documentary proof of U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections. Read the full text of the bill here.
However, the US Senate has done nothing on this bill since April 10, 2025 because GOP leadership believes they cannot muster enough Democrat votes to meet the 60 vote filibuster rule.
The only conservative legislation that has passed since Donald Trump was sworn into office was the One Big, Beautiful Bill which was a Budget Resolution that only required 51 votes.
The 60 vote filibuster rule means that our congress will not pass any conservative legislation, except for one more Budget Resolution, for the next year because Democrats will not support it. This means the Democrat minority in the US Senate defeats all proposed conservative legislation.
Why are some Republican US Senators protecting the filibuster rule when Democrats have already said they plan to abolish it once they gain control of the US Senate?
President Trump urged the US Senate to pass the SAVE Act on January 6, 2026.
Former Speaker of the House, Kevin McCarthy reports that “50 lawmakers from both parties are NOT running for re-election in 2026. Other lawmakers, including Reps. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), David Schweikert (R-Ariz.), Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.), Randy Feenstra (R-Iowa), Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), John Rose (R-Tenn.), Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), John James (R-Mich.) and Dusty Johnson (R-S.D.) are leaving the House to seek the governorship of their respective states.”
Perhaps many of these ambitious Republican House Members want to do something more productive with their public office than sit around and watch more years go by without being able to pass real conservative public policy because of the filibuster rule.
GOP Senate leadership must do more than nothing other than saying look at the One Big, Beautiful Bill as their claim to fame for the next year. GOP Senate leadership must force the Democrats to vote against the SAVE Act and other important conservative legislation so the voters will know where they stand or modify the filibuster rule.
Voters are watching. Inaction by GOP leadership is obvious especially when you have senators like John Kennedy publicly saying the Senate had accomplished "nothing, zero, zilch, nada." No wonder ten Republican Representatives are leaving congress to run for governor. How many more GOP members of congress will leave because the prospects of enacting conservative legislation are “zilch?”
GOP US Senate inaction could increase the chances of losing the majority in the US House giving no chance for enacting conservative laws that could protect and prosper Americans.
Florida Family Association has prepared an email for you to send to US Senate Majority Leader John Thune's Chief of Staff to urge the Majority Leader to move the SAVE Act to a vote.
